Doris Lightwine, a native of California, was
awarded a scholarship
for life drawing at Chouinard Art Institute while attending high
school. In 1953, upon completion of commercial art studies at LA
Trade Tech, Doris
accepted employment at Anderson Ritchie Press.
Doris and her family moved to Kingman in 1965.
During 1968 and
1969 she enrolled in studio painting classes at N.A.U. Her studies also
included classes with Roy Purcell and Don Stone.
She is a charter member of the Mohave Artists and
Craftsmen Guild of
Kingman, has served on the Arts and Humanities commission for the city
of Kingman, and as an art instructor at Kingman Jr. High School and in
the community school program Doris was director of the Mohave Museum of
History and Art from 1973 to 1976, where she had responsibility for
development
of new exhibits as well as operation of the museum. For the past
twenty years she has owned and operated her own art gallery.
Doris has won many ribbons and prizes for her art at
art shows, county
fairs and the Arizona State Fair. In 1988 she was the proud
recipient
of the Women Making History Art Award.
Her grandchildren, reading and travel are her favorite
hobbies.
Inspiration for many of her paintings comes from her travel memories
and
photographs. Doris works exclusively with acrylics, but the
subjects
of her paintings run the full range from portraits to landscapes and
everything
in between.
One of her goals is to share her vision of the beauty
she sees all around,
in Kingman and her travels. Her desire is that you, the viewer,
take
pleasure in her interpretations.
