Desert Tortoise

They are now 5 years old. I made their pen larger this year so they could move around more and have planted grass in the new section. Desert tortoise do not go in the water, except to soak, they are desert animals. I had the bottom of a bucket cut off and buried for them to drink and soak in. In their area I have planted clover, alfalfa, ground morning glory (convolvus), orange malva, and grass. I also feed them tortoise food, assorted vegetables, dandelions, mulberry leaves, and grape leaves.

September 2006- These are current photo's. They have dug a new hole under a rose bush in their pen and I buried their previous hole. I made them a bigger watering hole. They like climbing into the water and soaking and their old water pan was way too small for that.

The black around them is the mulch over the new grass seed. They will have a nice grassy area when it comes in good.
