I moved to Lake Havasu City in March 1992 after retirement from the Los Angeles area. My wife Laura, KC7GYM, followed me in November. We were both curious about amateur radio but never seemed to have the time to investigate obtaining a license.
Once retired and relocated here, I started out one morning looking for a tower or an aluminum farm which would indicate that a ham was nearby. The first tower I spotted was that belonging to Jim Smith N6EVD. I knocked on the door and a wonderful lady named Nelda, N6EVL,answered. I told Nelda that I was interested in becoming a ham radio operator and I would like to ask some questions pertaining to the hobby.
Nelda directed me to the garage and said I should ask her husband Jim. After introductions, and a couple cups of Jim’s really strong coffee, we started a friendship that continues to this day. That was the beginning of my involvement in amateur radio. I now hold an Advanced class license and am a volunteer examiner.
I find this hobby to be very psychologically rewarding as well as a lot of fun. There seems to be no end to the challenges available. 73’s John.
