The Simon Farm house lawn in Peconic, LI, NY has been in place since 1933 next to grandmother Simon's home which has stood since 1868. The maximum application of anything to our lawns has been some lime in the fall to increase the pH. We have never used pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers on our lawns grown on Long Island soil. Mowing a little higher at about 3 inches, shades out the weeds and keeps the crabgrass at bay. Despite many years of baseball, football, and assorted tearups by children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren the green lawn lives on. The grass is green, the crabgrass is also green, and the lawn continues to live happily. Why should we put any of the pesticide-herbicide lawn products on our lawn, when obviously they are not needed? If homeowners would just think before they overreact and buy the lawn care products and services they would save themselves hundreds of dollars per year and help reduce pollution by the million fold.
