Introduction
- An
International Network
-
- Who we are:
- The Artists with MCS
network was founded by Moon McNeill, a painter and an
author from Germany, in August 2001. She suffered from a
lack of information about safe materials and the
possibilities of continuing to work as an artist after
her MCS-diagnosis. After a long and difficult period of
reorientation, she found that the arts are not only the
perfect medium to express MCS-specific content, but art
could also give a new perspective to lives damaged by
environmental illness. Art is therapeutic in itself. On
top of that, the founder soon realized that more artists
with MCS seemed to be waiting for such a group. Now, she
is accompanied by a growing number of German and American
painters, musicians, filmmakers, sculptors, videoartists
and authors, some of them well known.
-
- What we do:
- Artists with MCS is -
first of all - a medium for discussing plans and ideas; a
way to share experiences with art materials, or to solve
personal or artistic problems or needs. It is a space
where artists of all kinds can connect, trusting they
will be taken seriously, and where help of all sorts is
honored. The network members help each other with trust
and loving kindness to continue their work, or find their
way back to working as an artist in spite of their
limitations. They exchange knowledge about safe, odorless
colors or tolerable recording units, or to learn about
new techniques that take the illness's consequential
damage into consideration. Artists with MCS sometimes
have to learn to work on smaller things like poems, short
stories or small film sequences instead of dreaming of
big books, monster paintings and three-hour-movies. They
have to learn to follow their bodies' needs rather than
pursuing artistic visions from the life before MCS. An
MCS diagnosis may put an end to some dreams - but it may
also open completely new visions and ideas we can follow.
Most MCS-artists have to develop new and MCS-specific
ways of presenting themselves to the public and
especially selling their artwork. All this we want to
develop - for us and all those who surely will follow.
-
- Who can join:
- Every person diagnosed
with MCS can join us, no matter if he/she is an amateur
or a professional. We expect devotion to the network's
ethics and respect for the members' personal and creative
rights. Chemical contamination is to be prevented under
all circumstances. The health of everyone the most
important value. It is understood that we do not accept
any use of the contacts for matters that conflict with
members' interests. Knowledge about safe materials,
possible sponsors, exhibitions, etc., is to be given
freely to every member. It is understood and accepted
that no one uses the artwork of others without personal
permission of the artist. Copyrights are to be taken
seriously. Members who do not follow these minimum rules
can be excluded without further argument or discussion.
Every member can introduce ideas for joint projects, but
participation is always voluntary as health conditions
vary. Several smaller projects are already in a state of
development.

How
to Apply for Membership
If you want to be a member of the network Artists with MCS you
need to be an artist having this illness. It is not important if
you are an amateur or a professional artist. What is more
important is that you take your arts seriously, want to improve
your style, want to exhibit, publish or support us creating an
awareness of MCS, need help in artistic questions, and want to be
connected to other artists in Europe and the United States. It is
understood that no one misuses someone else's art or any
knowledge about personal circumstances.
If you want to join us, you can write to Moon McNeill at mcsartists@web.de or Artists with
MCS, Postbox 5063, 24062 Kiel, Germany. Please give a
short review of who you are, where you live, what you do, and why
this network would be important to you. Please give your full
postal address, your real name and two references. This way we
can contact you if computer problems anywhere prevent e-mail
communication for a prolonged time. Address and references will
be checked. Membership in the network and the chatgroup always
follows the rule of loving kindness in communication. This is the
main and principal rule we agreed upon. MCS is an illness that
makes our lives difficult and stressful enough. What we want to
create here is arts and friendship, what we want to share here is
poems, paintings, songs, cartoons, projects and encouragement,
and the way we want to treat each other is with humor, patience,
kindness and respect. A tolerance for insults, discouragement,
diminishment or anything of that sort can not be taken as given.
Those who continuously break the rule of friendliness can be
excluded by the president.
How
to Take Part in the Network
The network offers a regular newsletter,
The Creative Canary. It is published
twice a year. Issue number one contains information, interviews
and articles about network members, safe paints, interesting
events etc. Issue number two is a literary issue. Members of the
network can write for both issues. Every member gets a bi-monthly report about
network activities, so (s)he is able to follow what other members
do without needing to contact everyone personally. Everyone can
post information about projects (s)he is involved in. Our member,
Mary Kim Kempf, offers pages on her private homepage. Every
members can get a free page.
Guidelines for submissions can be seen below. We plan to open an
official gallery homepage 2005, where members can present artwork
for sale. The network members also create joint
projects from time to time. The first one has been a
German-language MCS-anthology in 2003. These projects mainly care
for a wider awareness of the MCS-problem. Every member can
initiate projects of this sort. It is understood that the
president is always informed about initiatives that involve other
network members. At groups.yahoo.com/group/CreativeCanariesChatgroup
we offer a chatgroup. Only members of the network can join here.
Membership in the network is free, but donations for reports and
newsletter are welcome. Any question or problem can be discussed
with Moon McNeill at mcsartists@web.de
